Initially, task-related communication links develop in an institution so that subordinates can get the information they need to carryout, their work and co-ordinate different tasks with that of their colleagues.

Downward-directed messages are usually directives from the principal and are accepted at face value.

On the other hand, upward-directed messages consist of information from teachers sometimes aimed at maximizing their own gains.

There is also a likelihood of information distortion in the upward flow.

Downward communication is necessary in all institutions.

Over a long period, these communication relationships become a sophisticated social system comprising of both small-group communication networks and a larger institutional network.

A communication network is composed of a specific body of individuals who are interconnected as links in the communication flow.
