The prince and the princess met to discuss their plan, and Princess Ariadne gave Theseus a large sword and a ball of string. Her instructions were to bring both to the labyrinth - which is a maze - where the Minotaur lives.
Luckily for Theseus, when he arrived in Crete, Ariadne, King Minos's daughter, fell instantly in love with him.
She gave him a string to help him find his way out of the labyrinth once he defeated the Minotaur.
The sword was to kill the Minotaur, and the string was to clasp onto the entrance door of the maze, so Theseus could find his way out.
The following morning, Theseus and the children were brought to the maze, and Theseus came prepared with Princess Ariadne's gifts. Theseus killed the Minotaur, and he was able to sneak out of the maze with the help of the string and Princess Ariadne, who opened the door for him.
King Aegeus, the King of Athens, knew his country could not defend itself against King Minos and complied.
However, Aegeus's son Theseus eventually had enough of this injustice and volunteered to defeat the Minotaur.
Later, Prince Theseus received a letter from Princess Ariadne in which she asks the prince to take her with him in exchange for help in killing the monster.
Theseus was interested - anything to help him defeat the Minotaur.
However, when Ariadne broached the idea of marriage, Theseus was less than pleased because he did not find her attractive.
So, when his ship docked on an island, Theseus sent Ariadne off to gather supplies and then left her on the island.
