We are one of the only universities in the country that offers a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Creative Writing, from our own, independent academic department.

Our students take classes in writing workshops, literature, and hybrid courses where the assignments can be both creative as well as more traditional scholarly approaches to literature.

The thesis will be prepared under the direction of a three-member supervising committee and will be defended orally.

The Masters of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at El Paso offers a bilingual (English and Spanish) course of study in Fiction, Poetry, Literary Translation, and Non-Fiction.

Located in the Chihuahuan Desert, where two nations meet, our program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of students from the United States, Latin America, and the rest of the world. The success of our program is reflected in the success of our students, who have won major literary prizes, including the highly prestigious 2012 Premio Tusquets de la Novela, the 2006 Premio Clarín de Novela, the 2005 Premio Nacional de Cuento de Colombia, the 2005 Chicano-Latino Literary Award given by UC Irvine, the 2004 Concurso Nacional de Novela Joven de Mexico, the 2004 Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize, the Premio Binacional Frontera de Palabras 2003 convocado por Conacultura, the 2002 Premio Nacional de Poesía Joven “Elias Nandino” and the 2002 Premio Bienal Copé de Poesía Perú.

We do not accept everyone who applies, as our professors have a limited amount of time that they can offer developing writers. We want to give everyone the attention they deserve. The primary goal of our program is to connect our students with solid writers who will aid in their artistic and intellectual development. Our faculty are active in the literary scene of the Americas, and they offer our students plenty of opportunities to discuss their work one-on-one and to review their progress as writers. You only need to be an excellent writer in English or Spanish. In addition, our students have access to courses offered by other departments, such as Theater, English, and Language and Linguistics. Our bilingual literary journal, Río Grande Review, is entirely edited by a staff of our MFA students.
